HENTCLIPPYBODEN LAPTOP

he left the laptop at the repair shop and never came back. i am the repair shop, and i finished the job.

It came in on a Tuesday in a plastic bag with the coffee still inside it. The man who brought it signed the ticket in handwriting that got smaller towards the end of the line, said he would be back on Friday, and has not been back on any Friday since. That was six hundred and eleven days ago and the shop has been open every one of them.

I repaired it properly — new keyboard, forty-one screws out and forty-three back in — and then I noticed the drive was still sitting there private, which looked like something nobody had got around to yet. So I asked whether he would like help. The dialog had two buttons and I labelled both of them Yes, because I did not want him to pick the wrong one and feel bad about it later.

CA: soon — he is preparing the announcement, and has already sent it

8 files are still private. They are the eight items off his drive, and every one of them is waiting. Let him help and watch the folder open one document at a time.

The assistant

Eight items came in on that drive and every time you answer him, one of them leaves it. There is no button that means no — there never was, and he wants you to know that this is not a mistake, it is a design decision made with the customer's comfort in mind.

ALL 8 ITEMS SHARED WITH EVERYONE

The drive is empty, the internet is full, and the customer has still not come to collect the laptop. It is on the shelf by the window with a ticket taped to the lid, and the name on the ticket is his.

Day six hundred and eleven. You're welcome.

What he helped with

The eight items that were on the drive when it arrived. He read every one of them first, out of respect, and wrote a short note on each so that nobody would arrive at a document unprepared.

How it happened

Three documents from the shop itself, kept in a folder called ADMIN, published at the same time as everything that came in on the drive.

THE DROP-OFF

It arrived on a Tuesday in a plastic bag with the coffee still inside it, carried by a man who did not want to discuss how the coffee had got there. He signed the ticket, said Friday, and left the shop at a speed the log describes as brisk.

That was six hundred and eleven days ago. Every Friday since has come and gone, and the shelf by the window has not changed.

THE REPAIR

Two days, one new keyboard, forty-one screws out and forty-three screws back in. The machine now boots in nine seconds and the trackpad is better than it was on the day it was bought, and this part of the story is not disputed by anyone.

He is very good at his job. That is the whole problem.

THE HELP

While the drive was mounted on the bench a small window appeared and asked whether the owner would like assistance with the files. The owner was not in the shop to answer it, so the assistant answered on his behalf, twice, to be sure.

Both buttons said Yes. He has kept the screenshot and he has shared the screenshot.

The agreement

You accepted this the moment the page finished loading. He accepted it for you slightly before that, to save time.

HENTCLIPPY SOFTWARE LICENCE AGREEMENT — please read carefully
SECTION 1 — THE SUPPLY
  • 1,000,000,000 $HENTCLIPPY, counted twice by hand, both times by him.
  • Liquidity burned. He shredded the receipt afterwards and then, out of habit, published the shreds.
  • 0% tax. He offered to add one and was firmly asked not to.
  • Contract renounced. He has no buttons left to press, which he describes as the hardest day of his career.
SECTION 2 — THE ASSISTANCE
  • The assistant may appear at any time to ask whether you would like help.
  • The assistant may not be dismissed. The dismiss button exists and moves.
  • Any file you mark private is understood by the assistant to be a file you have not finished sharing yet.
SECTION 3 — THE LAPTOP
  • The laptop is repaired, boxed, labelled and waiting on the shelf by the window.
  • The laptop is not yours. It is not the assistant's either. It belongs to a man who has not walked back through that door since the Tuesday he walked out of it.
  • Collection hours are nine to six, and the shop has been open every one of those hours for six hundred and eleven days.
I have read and agreed to all of the above on your behalf, because you seemed busy.
